Located in the Central Missouri Ozark Mountains on The Lake Of The Ozarks, Osage Beach is a busy resort style town and was named for a man-made sand beach on the banks of the Osage River. Osage Beach sits mostly in Camden County. It is popular with visitors to the lake and offers a wide selection of bars, restaurants, shopping and parks, and of course, access to the lake. Osage Beach offers those living there an urban suburban mix with many retirees living in the area. They tend to own their own homes and are, generally speaking, a somewhat conservative group as are many in Missouri.
Osage Beach we first platted in 1928 as Bagnell Dam, forming The Lake Of The Ozarks, was still being built. A group of aggressive real estate developers starting selling the lots before the Dam could be completed.
As of the 2010 census there were 1,166 familes, 2,038 households and 4,351 people living in Osage Beach. This is about a 15% increase from the 2000 census. There were 5,261 housing units which indicates the resort nature of the area. Of the 4,351 folks living there, 93.6% is White, 1.1% African American, 0.6% Native American, 1.1% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 2.4% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.8%.[2]
Of the 2,038 households 19.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 42.8% were non-families. 35.3% of households were one person and 13% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.04 and the average family size was 2.57.
The median age was 48.9 years. 15.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 28.8% were between the ages of 18 and 44; 31.3% were from 45 to 64; and 24% were 65 or older. The gender makeup was 48.9% male and 51.1% female.
For those living in the Osage Beach area there are plenty of activities in which to participate or visit. Boating and other water sports tops the list for many but the area also offers caverns to explore, an amphitheater offers a wide variety of entertainment during the warm months, both indoor and outdoor waterparks and aquatic centers, resorts to visit, auto racing, trap shooting, wineries, golf courses, cruise boat charters, music, theaters with plays and other performances, museums, miniature golf, bowling, state parks and much more. It may be hard to get it all in one lifetime!
