Camdenton Missouri, the County Seat of Camden County is a busy but pleasant town on The Lake of the Ozarks. It was formed in 1930 during the Great Depression so nothing in Camdenton is more than about 90 years old. It was formed specifically to be the county seat of Camden County. Situated on the Lower Niangua Arm of the Lake of the Ozarks it is a popular spot for visitors and many shopping and recreational opportunities.
Camdenton was not the first county seat of Camden County but became the county seat mostly as a result of Bagnell Dam being built and the new Lake of the Ozarks being formed by it. As the story goes, the new town needed a good name and a man named John T. Woodruff is said to have consulted a gazetteer and found there was no other place in the U.S. named Camdenton at that time and the name stuck.
In the early 1920’s, R.W. Street of St. Joseph, MO began considering the possibility for hydroelectric power being generated by building dams on rivers in the Northern Ozarks of Central Missouri. Despite the best efforts of several groups to stop it, Louis Egan, President of the Union Electric Land and Development Company, announced in October of 1927 that the dam would be built. Construction on what would become Bagnell Dam began 2 years later on August 6th, 1929 and the generation of hydroelectric power began on October 16, 1931.
Camdenton has grown and prospered through the years. As of the 2010 census the total population was 3,718 people with 1,441 households and 901 families. Of the 1,441 households, 36.8% had children under the age of 18, 39.9% were married couples and 37.5% were non-families. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.07. The population is made up of a broad range of age groups with 28.1% of residents being under the age of 18, 36.4% were between the ages of 18 and 44 while 21.8% were from 45 to 64 and 13.8% were 65 years of age or older. 47.3% was male and 52.7% was female.
Camdenton is located at the crossroads of Hwy 54 and Hwy 5 which provides easy access to Kansas City, Columbia, Springfield and St Louis and many other Midwest cities.
In additional to being situated on the Lake of the Ozarks with the boating, fishing and other water sports offered, there are lots of other activities in the area. There are caves to explore, trails for hiking, state parks to visit, several festivals, a Farmers Market, an annual air show, several golf courses, theater and musical productions, lodges, resorts, fine dining, shopping and much more.
